  • Upgrading old PERL scripts

    I'm playing with old tech on my tilde - specifically, Blosxom, a
    blogging tool written in PERL I played with back in the early 2000s.
    It's nice, simple, can create static pages or dynamically serve a blog,
    and had a wide variety of plugins.

    One limitation is that it doesn't have pagination - you can't flip
    through pages of posts, only see one page's worth.

    There's a whole registry of plugins, including the pagination I want,
    but they were all written in 2003. There are deprecated statements in
    the code that throw up errors. My PERL was spotty at best back in the
    day - does anyone have experience with LLMs updating PERL code, or any
    other tools that can automatically update PERL code?

    Blosxom with some of the plugins enabled would be a wonderful smol blogging platform.

    I have another app, a photo gallery app. It's written in PHP, that also
    hasn't been updated in as many years and is throwing up errors. I'm
    interested in updating it as well.

    What's "smol"?

    That's an internet slang word. From Google:

    A small *nix system set up online as a community using old-school tools
    like email, nntp, local message boards, Gemini, Gopher and personal web servers. You log in with an SSH client and get a command line shell.

    Back in the day, web providers would often provide web space to user
    accounts, with the URL being http://yourisp.com/~username, and the ~
    stuck as a name for the concept.

    I've had a lot of fun playing with web 1.0 tools, hanging out on their
    IRC, and learning about Gemini - oh, and reading email with (al)PINE
    again. Oh, and I finally learned how to use tmux to have multiple
    console screens in an SSH session.
